Case study – Study of recommendation of settings for an elastomer extrusion process
Aeronautical sector
Customer type: Group
Service contact: R&D
Extrusion is a thermomechanical process often used for shaping high-viscosity products. Generally inserted in the form of granules, the product is kneaded between a screw and the sheath of the machine under suitable thermal and mechanical conditions, before being extruded through one or more dies.
Following inconclusive internal and laboratory pilot tests, the client called on RHEONIS to use its techniques to study the appropriate extrusion parameters for processing an elastomer.
Product/process instrumental simulation study
RHEONIS implemented its unique instrumental simulation approach combining rheometry and process modeling to formulate recommendations for the extrusion of an elastomer product with a defined formulation.
The main stages of the study:
- Rheometric study of the behavior of the elastomer under representative thermomechanical stresses and quantification of the characteristic parameters associated with extrusion
- 1D thermomechanical modeling of the extrusion process
- Interpretation of data and recommendations for temperature ranges suitable for elastomer extrusion

Operational recommendations with a significant saving in time and material consumption
The instrumental process simulation approach does not require the use of pilot equipment. As such, it consumes little material and resources. It is by the implementation of specific instrumental protocols and a simplified modeling of the extrusion process that one manages to determine the most favorable conditions for the extrusion of a product. The time saving is significant compared to trial and error approaches, which in this case did not succeed in the first instance. The recommendations made by RHEONIS allowed the effective extrusion of the product.
The advantages of the approach for an operational extrusion process
Quick study
Low material consumption
No recourse to the production tool
Recommendations based on the physical behavior of the product
Possibility of optimizing the product/process couple
